Jhansi Fort

The fort of Maharani Jhansi has strategic importance since the earliest of times. It was built by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo (1606-27) of Orchha on a rocky hill called Bangra in the town of Balwantnagar (presently known as Jhansi).

The fort has ten gates ( Darwaza) .Some of these are Khandero Gate, Datia Darwaza, Unnao gate, Jharna Gate, Laxmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Orcha Gate, Sainyar Gate, Chand gate. Among places of interest within the main fort area are the Karak Bijli Toup ( Tank), Rani Jhansi Garden, Shiv temple and a "Mazar" of Ghulam Gaus Khan, Moti Bai and Khuda Baksh.

The Jhansi fort, a living testimony of ancient glamor and valour, also has a fine collection of sculptures which provide an excellent inside into the eventful history of Bundelkhand .

Rani Mahal

Rani Mahal, Palace of Rani Lakshmi Bai embelished with multi colored art and painting on its walls and ceilings. Presently this palace is converted into a museum. It has a massive collection of Sculptures of the period between the 9th and 12th Centuries AD, housed here by the Archaeologral Survey of India.


21 km. from Jhansi, on the road to Khajuraho, Baruasagar is the historic spot where the battle between the Peshwa's troops and the Bundelas was fought in 1744. The place is named after the Baruasagar Tal, a large lake formed about 260 years ago, when an embankment was erected by Raja Udit Singh of Orchha. A fine, old fort built by him, picturesquesly situated on an eminence, commands an excellent view of the lake and surrounding landscape


85 Km. from Jhansi the Fort covering an area of 5 acres, is built on a hillock.


Samthar lies at a distance of 66 Km. from Jhansi and 13 Km. from Moth. Formerly called Samshergarh, it is now known as Samthar. It was an independent principality under the great Gujjar warriors of the 17th and 18th centuries. Chandrabhan Bar Gujar and his grandson Madan Singh, governors of the state of Datia, are credited with the creation of the independent state of Samthar


It is dedicated to Shiva and Parwati and located at Baua Sagar. The estern side of its Shikhara is lavishly ornamented with massive stone sculpture.


93 Km. from Jhansi. This is an ideal picnic spot developed by the irrigation department. Water - sports and a garden on the lines of the Vrindavan garden are added attractions.


Built on the river Betwa, is about 25 kms from Jhansi on the Jhansi-Kanpur National Highway No. 25. Its reservoir- a placid stretch of water that runs to Notghat Bridge, 34 km away, is ideal for water sports


140 Km. Associated with the Chandela Kings who rules over Bundelkhand between the 9th and 11th century. The places to visit is Chandel Rahelia sun temple, Khakhara Math, Madan Sagar, Keerat Sagar, Vijay Sagar etc


18 Km. from Jhansi. It was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Chieftain, Rudra Pratap Singh. The place is famous for various historical monuments and Raja Ram Temple.


28 Km. Famous for the Siddhapeeth of Peetambra Devi.


Further 15 Km. from Datia it is a chain of Jain Temples. 108 Jain temples date back to 1500 years, all arranged on the steps of a hill. The main group of temples (57 numbers) on the top of the hill is in honour of the 8th Tirthankara.

St. Jude's Church

One most famous Church situated in Jhansi is the St Jude's Shrine. Quite number of disciples makes their visit to this church and gives their participation in the daily mass prayer that takes place. Reaching this place is merely very simple. You can avail any mode of transport such as tempo, taxi, cabs from the nearby bus stand. The service timings of the shrine are stated as follows:

Sunday Masses during summer will be on 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and 6:00 p.m. whereas Sunday Masses during winter will be on 7:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. People visiting the shrine will make their possible donation for the betterment of the shrine.

Panchkuian Temple

The Panchkuian Temple is a very old temple in Jhansi. Hundreds of visitors come here to relive history and to pray. It is said that Lakshmi bai herself used to worship here everyday.

Balaji Temple, Unao

The Balaji temple is situated in the vicinity of Unao. Unao is a small town falls under Datia district in Madhya Pradesh. Unao is 17 kilometers away from Datia and around 18 kilometers from Jhansi (famous for Jhanshi ki Rani, LakshmiBai.The deity Balaji is very much famous for curing skin ailments. People from far distant places come and worship the deity. Below the temple, a river is also flowing. There are some wells in the river, at the time of summer, people used to have bathe with the water in the wells. It is said that, if you have bathe in river and offer water to deity Balaji, all your incurable skin ailments will be cured within few days. Sunday is considered as the day of deity Balaji (Sun). All the inhabitants of Unao and the surrounding region has enormous faith in the deity and also have felt the power of it. Each family in unao have at least one member in government jobs.


Shivpuri is 101 Kms away from Jhansi. It is the summer capital of the scindia rulers of Gwalior. It is famous for its forests, wild animals and natural surroundings. Shivpuri’s dense forests were once used by Mughal emperors as their hunting grounds. The places of interest are the Madhav National Park, Madhav Vilas Palace, George Castle and the Bhadaiya Kund.


Maha Lakshmi Temple an ancient temple devoted to Devi Mahalaxmi was built in 18th Century. This glorious temple is situated outside Laxmi "Darwaza" near Laxmi Tal.

Maharaja Gangadhar Rao ki Chathri.

The Samadhi of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao is situated on the Laxmi Tal. After the death of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao in 1853 this ancient monument was built by his wife Maharani Laxmi Bai.

Ganesh Mandir

Ganesh Mandir, where the marriage ceremany of Maharani Laxmi Bai, the brave hero of 1857 Inedependence war, and Maharajai Gangadhar Rao was performed. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh.
